Backlinks are links from other websites that point toward your website. Backlinks are extremely important in terms of SEO. The number of back links and their Anchor Text will effect your rankings with SERPS and your Google page rank.
If you want to check your back links then the two following tools will help.
Go to the google home page and type the following
link:website url (example link:www.jumbleworld.com)
The search will return a list of websites with backlinks to yours.
You can also use the yahoo site explorer tool.

Type in the site URL and then click explore.
To get you back links you will need to click on the inlinks tab. When using the tool remember to exclude the links from your own domain.
